Ivan Schoch joined Ambassador Zellerbach as Viticulturist in the early days of Hanzell Vineyards. He was responsible for installing the new vineyards in 1953 working with terraced and hillside land. It was at this time, Mr. Schoch was able to plant St. George rootstock and introduce to Hanzell the Mt. Eden budwood (rumored to be from DRC) from the Stelling Vineyards. His Chardonnay clone of choice was the Wente Clone sourced from the famed Stony Hill Vineyards in Napa Valley.
